Trojans win non-conference game vs. Walther Lutheran

On Friday night, the Timothy Christian Gymnasium was rocking once again. The Red Zone was out in full force and the game turned into quite an exciting contest. The Trojans came out very sluggish in the first quarter and Walther had the intensity needed right from the start. At the end of the first quarter the Trojans trailed by a score of 20-9. The team did not quit nor did they try to get everything back at once. They kept chipping away at the lead and at the half trailed 29-23. The third quarter was a back and forth contest and a 3 pointer at the buzzer by Mike Pizzello brought the Trojans within 46-42 at the quarter. The fourth quarter saw the Trojans to continue to battle and finally take the lead only to see Walther regain the lead. The Trojans were able to have the lead by one when Matt Morrison came up with a crucial block on a driving shot by a Walther player. Matt also then got a crucial steal on the inbound. The Trojans were able to hit just enough free throws to hold on to the victory 58-56.
The Trojans were led by Mark Penczak (13 pts, 4 rebs, 1 stl, 1 assist) who had some crucial drives which drew fouls. Mark also made 8 of 10 free throws on the night. Mike Pizzello (14 pts, 2 rebs, 3 stls, 3 asssists), Matt Morrison (10 pts, 5 rebs, 2 stls, 1 block), Matt Robinson (8 pts, 3 rebs, 1 stl),Danny Leach (9 pts, 3 rebs, 1 stl, 5 assists), Chris Ridolphi (4 pts, 6 rebs, 1 stl, 1 assist), Troy Ellens (1 assist), and Chad Vos (3 rebs, 1 stl, 3 assists) all cracked the stat sheet on the night.
The night was special to begin with as Timothy Christian and the boys basketball program honored Coach Jim Boven who will be retiring from coaching this season. He has coached at Timothy Christian for 34 years and all but one of them have been at the freshman level. Thank you coach Boven for your years of service.
The Trojans would like to thank the fans who have been so strong in supporting the team. Please keep coming out and supporting the Trojans.
This week the Trojans travel on Tuesday to Glenbard South who is in second place in the conference. The game will begin at 7:00pm. The Trojans will be back home on Friday night for a contest with conference opponent Illiana Christian. Game time is at 7:30 pm.

Trojans victorious vs. Aurora Christian

On Tuesday night Timothy Christian gymnasium was packed as the Trojans hosted the Eagles from Aurora Christian. The gym was packed in part because it was a special event night consisting of a recognition and congratulations to the middle school boys basketball teams and a performance by our mini-cheerleaders. The fans received a treat as the Trojans turned in one of their best performances of the season. On the offensive end, they were very unselfish registering 20 assists on the evening. On the defensive end, they played a very strong team defensive game. In the end of a very solid game the Trojans were able to come out with a 77-53 victory. With the exception of Troy Ellens who was out with an injury, all Trojan players were able to get a lot of playing time and all crack the stat sheet on the evening.

Danny Leach (19 pts, 7 rebs, 4 assists), Mike Pizzello (14 pts, 7 assists, 4 rebs, 3 stls), and Mark Penczak (12 pts, 4 asssists) all reached double figures in scoring on the night. All of the remaining Trojans ended up on the stat sheet. Matt Robinson (3 pts, 2 rebs, 2 stls, 2 assists), Chris Ridolphi (5 pts, 4 rebs, 3 stls, 2 assists), Aaron Snoeyink (1 reb, 1 assist), Nathan Ziegler (7 pts, 2 rebs), Matt Morrison (6 pts, 6 rebs), Tyler VanderBrug (2 pts, 3 rebs), Chad Vos (4 pts, 2 rebs), Brennen Lindsey (1 pt, 2 stls, 1 assist), Nathan Boot (2 pts, 2 reb, 1 stl) and Jon Penczak (2 pts, 1 reb).

Trojans take two this weekend

This weekend was very busy and exciting for the boys from Timothy. On Friday night, the Trojans faced a tough conference opponent in Fenton. The game was close throughout with the Trojans down 24-23 at the half. A strong third quarter put the Trojans ahead at the end of the 3rd quarter 40-36. The fourth quarter was a see saw battle and the game was tied with about 16 seconds to go when Chris Ridolphi found Mike Pizzello for a baseline shot to take the lead with about 6 seconds to play. Fenton was able to get off a 3 pt attempt which was just short and they got an offensive rebound and the put back rimmed out so the Trojans were able to hold on for a 53-51 victory. Mike Pizzello led the Trojans with 14 pts, 6 stls, and 3 rebs. There were strong contributions from many team members. Chris Ridolphi (9 pts, 4 rebs, 2 assists, 1 stl), Mark Penczak (9 pts, 4 rebs, 2 stls, 1 assist), Danny Leach (9 pts, 5 assists, 1 steal, 1 reb), Nathan Boot (4 rebs, 4 pts), Matt Robinson (3 pts, 4 rebs, 4 stls, 2 assists), Nathan Ziegler (3 rebs, 2 assists, 2 pts.), Chad Vos (2 pts, 2 rebs, 2 assists), and Matt Morrison (1 reb, 1 stl) all appeared on the stat sheet on this night.

On Saturday, the Trojans travelled to Holland Michigan to take on the Maroons from Holland Christian. Once again, the snow, ice, and cold weather made for a long tiring trip. The trip was worth it as the game was very entertaining for the fans. The Civic center was rocking as the Trojans and Maroons did battle in a closely fought contest. In the end, the Trojans were able to pull out the victory 76-68 in overtime.

Holland Christian has a starting line-up with height that college coaches dream about. They have four players starting who are all over 6'4.
They start 6'9, 6'7, 6'5, 6'4 and 5'11. The Trojans were at a height disadvantage but were able to ride the quickness and hot shooting of Danny Leach (20 pts, 5-7 from 3 pt land) to go into half-time with a 36-27 lead. The third quarter saw Holland come back on the Trojans and at the end of the third the score was 51-49 Trojans. The fourth quarter was a back and forth battle and the Trojans had a chance to win it at the end but missed a jumper at the buzzer. With the teams tied at 64-64 they headed to overtime. In the overtime, Mark Penczak buried a 3 pt shot to give the Trojans the lead. The defense stepped up to contest shots and Mike Pizzello was able to make 9-10 free throws in the overtime and preserve the victory for Timothy 76-68.

Mike Pizzello continued to have a very strong weekend. He finished the night with a double/double recording 25 pts and 11 rebounds to go along with 5 steals and 5 assists. Mark Penczak and Chad Vos had very strong games to go along with the shooting of Pizzello and Leach. Penczak (10 pts, 3 assists, 2 stls, 2 rebs),Vos (6 pts, 7 assists, 4 rebs, 2 stls), Matt Robinson (4 pts.), Chris Ridolphi (4 pts, 3 rebs, 3 assists), Matt Morrison (5 pts, 2 rebs, 1 stl, 1 assist), Nathan Boot (3 rebs), and Nate Ziegler (1 assist) were all able to get on the stat sheet. Thank you so much to all the fans that came out to Holland for the weekend. It was a very enjoyable time by all.
The entire Trojan basketball team is to be commended for continuing to work hard each and every day. We are starting to put things together and their hard work and positive attitude is very much appreciated. The Trojans now stand at 10-7 on the season and are 3-3 in conference play.

The next game is Home on Tuesday vs. Aurora Christian and then again on Friday vs. Walther Lutheran. Both games have 7:30 pm starts. On Tuesday, the middle school 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teams will be recognized and on Friday, we will recognize the contributions from Coach Jim Boven who is retiring from coaching freshman basketball after 34 years. Please come out and support the Trojans and also these individuals on these special nights.

We will take a few minutes before the varsity game to honor "Coach Bov" and then will have a small reception following the varsity game.

Please come out and say "thanks" to Coach Boven.
