Trojans take two this weekend

This weekend was very busy and exciting for the boys from Timothy. On Friday night, the Trojans faced a tough conference opponent in Fenton. The game was close throughout with the Trojans down 24-23 at the half. A strong third quarter put the Trojans ahead at the end of the 3rd quarter 40-36. The fourth quarter was a see saw battle and the game was tied with about 16 seconds to go when Chris Ridolphi found Mike Pizzello for a baseline shot to take the lead with about 6 seconds to play. Fenton was able to get off a 3 pt attempt which was just short and they got an offensive rebound and the put back rimmed out so the Trojans were able to hold on for a 53-51 victory. Mike Pizzello led the Trojans with 14 pts, 6 stls, and 3 rebs. There were strong contributions from many team members. Chris Ridolphi (9 pts, 4 rebs, 2 assists, 1 stl), Mark Penczak (9 pts, 4 rebs, 2 stls, 1 assist), Danny Leach (9 pts, 5 assists, 1 steal, 1 reb), Nathan Boot (4 rebs, 4 pts), Matt Robinson (3 pts, 4 rebs, 4 stls, 2 assists), Nathan Ziegler (3 rebs, 2 assists, 2 pts.), Chad Vos (2 pts, 2 rebs, 2 assists), and Matt Morrison (1 reb, 1 stl) all appeared on the stat sheet on this night.

On Saturday, the Trojans travelled to Holland Michigan to take on the Maroons from Holland Christian. Once again, the snow, ice, and cold weather made for a long tiring trip. The trip was worth it as the game was very entertaining for the fans. The Civic center was rocking as the Trojans and Maroons did battle in a closely fought contest. In the end, the Trojans were able to pull out the victory 76-68 in overtime.

Holland Christian has a starting line-up with height that college coaches dream about. They have four players starting who are all over 6'4.
They start 6'9, 6'7, 6'5, 6'4 and 5'11. The Trojans were at a height disadvantage but were able to ride the quickness and hot shooting of Danny Leach (20 pts, 5-7 from 3 pt land) to go into half-time with a 36-27 lead. The third quarter saw Holland come back on the Trojans and at the end of the third the score was 51-49 Trojans. The fourth quarter was a back and forth battle and the Trojans had a chance to win it at the end but missed a jumper at the buzzer. With the teams tied at 64-64 they headed to overtime. In the overtime, Mark Penczak buried a 3 pt shot to give the Trojans the lead. The defense stepped up to contest shots and Mike Pizzello was able to make 9-10 free throws in the overtime and preserve the victory for Timothy 76-68.

Mike Pizzello continued to have a very strong weekend. He finished the night with a double/double recording 25 pts and 11 rebounds to go along with 5 steals and 5 assists. Mark Penczak and Chad Vos had very strong games to go along with the shooting of Pizzello and Leach. Penczak (10 pts, 3 assists, 2 stls, 2 rebs),Vos (6 pts, 7 assists, 4 rebs, 2 stls), Matt Robinson (4 pts.), Chris Ridolphi (4 pts, 3 rebs, 3 assists), Matt Morrison (5 pts, 2 rebs, 1 stl, 1 assist), Nathan Boot (3 rebs), and Nate Ziegler (1 assist) were all able to get on the stat sheet. Thank you so much to all the fans that came out to Holland for the weekend. It was a very enjoyable time by all.
The entire Trojan basketball team is to be commended for continuing to work hard each and every day. We are starting to put things together and their hard work and positive attitude is very much appreciated. The Trojans now stand at 10-7 on the season and are 3-3 in conference play.

The next game is Home on Tuesday vs. Aurora Christian and then again on Friday vs. Walther Lutheran. Both games have 7:30 pm starts. On Tuesday, the middle school 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teams will be recognized and on Friday, we will recognize the contributions from Coach Jim Boven who is retiring from coaching freshman basketball after 34 years. Please come out and support the Trojans and also these individuals on these special nights.
