Trojans drop opener at Christmas tournament

The Glenbard West Christmas tournament opened tonight with the Trojans losing to Wheaton St. Francis 51-32. Down by 4 at half-time, the Trojans were hoping to regroup, but were outplayed in the 2nd half especially in the 4th quarter being outscored 16-4. Tonight was a disappointment as the Trojans lacked the energy and execution needed to play a disciplined St. Francis team. We hope to learn from this game and get better for future games. The Trojans were led by Robert White (11 pts.) and Peter Tameling (8 pts, 11 rebounds, and 4 steals). Rob Stein contributed 6 points and 7 rebounds. The Trojans continue the Glenbard West tournament on Monday Dec. 22 at 3:00 vs. Addison Trail. Please keep coming out and supporting the Trojans.

Service Project coming Jan. 3.

The Trojans will have a service project coming up after Christmas. On January 3rd, 2009, the basketball team will be serving the homeless of DuPage County. The team will be visiting a DuPage County P.A.D.S. Shelter to help set up beds, serve dinner, make lunches, and monitor sleeping areas. P.A.D.S. mission is to end and prevent homelessness by providing interim, transitional, and permanent supportive housing. The team is excited to serve and show the love of Christ to those in need. Matthew 25: 34-40
Thank you to Coach Huizinga for setting up this great opportunity to serve others.

Trojans lose to Nazareth in Overtime

Despite a heavy snowfall Tuesday night, the Trojans still battled Nazareth Academy and lost a home contest 53-48 in overtime. Nazareth controlled much of the tempo and the Trojans battled back from a 19-9 deficit in the 2nd quarter to take the lead in the 4th quarter 42-34. Nazareth answered with a 3 pointer and the Trojans were not able to hold the lead. With the score tied at 43-43 at the end of regulation, the Trojans had a chance for the win but the shot was slightly off the mark as it went in and out of the rim and the team headed to overtime. After scoring first in the overtime and Timothy unable to convert on the offensive end, Nazareth was able to hit 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch for the victory. This was a tough loss for the Trojans, but hopefully we can learn and benefit from the lessons learned in this game. The Trojans begin the Glenbard West Christmas tournament Saturday Dec. 20 at 4:30 vs. Wheaton St. Francis. Please come out and support the Trojans!

Victory at Lisle Shootout 12/14

The Trojans found themselves in a dogfight Saturday night at the Lisle Shootout. Behind 27-24 at halftime, the men from Timothy Christian kept battling in a physical contest to come out on top 55-44 vs. Argo High School from Summit Illinois. Peter Tameling earned MVP honors from Lisle staff for the game by contributing 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Congratulations Pete! Shaking off a rough shooting first half, Reggie Greenwood finished with 13 points, 6 steals, and 3 assists. Rob White had 12 points and 5 rebounds. Jaaron Holmes battled the big men and also through a bloody nose to finish with 7 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. This was a good contest for our players battling a team with athleticism and height as well as a physical presence. It was nice to see the team battle back and make good decisions and hit some key shots to secure the victory. The Trojans move to 6-1, 2-0 on the season. They will next be in action on their home floor Tuesday night 12/16 at 7:30. Please come out and support the Trojans!

Trojans win conference opener!

The Trojans traveled to Chicago Christian for the first conference game of the season. This night also marked the official dedication of Chicago Christian's new gymnasium. The gym was packed with loud fans from both schools. The men in red came ready to play opening with a strong first quarter and never looking back. The final score was 67-51. The game once again showed the depth and balance of the team. 3 players scored in double figures and 11 different players scored on the evening. The highlight of the game was the teamwork displayed by such hard work on the defensive end getting 14 steals and an amazing 18 assists on the offensive end. Rob White played a solid game contributing 13 points, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds. Kordel Smith had 11 points and 5 defensive touches on the evening. Jaaron Holmes celebrated his birthday by giving 10 points, 4 steals and 2 assists. The best part of the evening is how everyone contributed in so many different ways. The passing display of the team was a sight to behold. We really appreciate all the many fans that came to support. Please keep supporting the Trojans. The next game for the Trojans will be our home opener on Friday Dec. 12 at 7:30. We hope to see everyone there.

Holland Christian Game Jan. 10

I noticed on the Girls Blog that a parent has reserved some rooms at the Holiday Inn Express in Holland Michigan for the evening after the game on Jan. 10. I wanted to let you know that some of the girls team members will be staying in that hotel that evening. I am not sure how many rooms they will be using, but if you think anyone on our team would want to stay in that same hotel, let me know immediately and Mrs. Dirkse will try to see if she can get some more rooms put aside. My daughter is on the girls team so my family will most likely take one of those rooms. Remember that we will have a bus returning. Anyone choosing to stay overnight must do so with their parents. No pressure to stay, but useful information.

Trojans drop non-conference game at Immaculate Conception High School

The Trojans visited their neighbors to the north and lost the non-conference game to Immaculate Conception High School 51-62. IC never trailed in the contest as the Trojans started slowly and although kept fighting could not take the lead in the game. The game was tied with 4:00 to go in the 3rd quarter. That is the closest TC could get as IC made some crucial baskets to close out the game. IC was fresh off their football state championship and although not fully in basketball mode as of yet, 6-8 senior all-stater Matt Purdom was more than ready as he poured in 23 points vs the Trojans. The Trojans were led in scoring by Reggie Greenwood and Mark Penczak with 13 and 11 points respectively. Mike Pizzello provided a spark on the defensive end with 3 touches and 2 steals. Rob Stein came off the bench to battle inside and had 4 blocks and 3 rebounds. He finished with 7 points. The Trojans travel to Chicago Christian on Friday night as they begin the final year of the Private School League Conference. The Varsity Girls play at 6:00 followed by the Varsity Boys at 7:30. Please come out to support the Trojan teams.

Thanksgiving Champions at Lisle

After opening with a win vs. Montini, the Trojans finished the tournament beating Driscoll Catholic on Friday 57-35 and then captured the tournament championship on Saturday evening beating the host Lisle Lions 67-34.
The Driscoll game saw a very sluggish and sloppy first quarter for both teams as the score at the end of one quarter was 6-5 in favor of Driscoll. There was some concern going into the game about Driscoll's big men standing at 6'7 and 6'6 as well as their pressure defense. The 2nd quarter saw the Trojans turn up the defensive pressure of their own and begin to find their rhythm outscoring their opponent 18-2. The pressure continued into the 3rd quarter and the Trojans had a 21 point quarter. Many Trojans contributed to the win. Junior Kordel Smith led the Trojans with 13 points and 6 rebounds. Reggie Greenwood had 11 points, 5 assists, and 6 steals. Sophomores Mike Pizzello and Mark Penczak once again were big contributors. Penczak contributed 2 3pointers and finished with 8 points. Pizzello played outstanding defense against bigger players and had 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Peter Tameling once again was a force on the boards gathering 11 rebounds and playing excellent post defense.
The final game saw the Trojans once again display their quickness and depth. Beginning the game once again somewhat sluggish, the team regrouped and began using their quickness to their advantage on both ends of the court. The Trojans were leading 17-7 after the first quarter and never looked back. They continued the pressure defense and also had their running game beginning to show as they shared the ball considerably well finishing with 21 assists. Senior Jaaron Holmes led the Trojans with an incredible all around game scoring 5 points, 8 rebounds, 9 assists and 3 steals. Jaaron also played outstanding defense. Reggie Greenwood had 13 points 4 steals and 2 assists. Senior Robert White had 9 points and 4 assists. Juniors Kordel Smith and Justin Peeples had fine games finishing with 9 points a piece. The depth of the Trojans was clearly evident as everyone contributed in one way or another in the victory. Congratulations to Juniors Kordel Smith and Reggie Greenwood who were named to the all-tournament team. Both were very deserving and we felt that many of our other players could have been nominated as well.
After the first 3 games, the Trojans would like to thank the fan support. We are a work in progress. We are hoping to cut down on our unforced turnovers. It was very exciting to see that we have so many people that can step in and supply whatever the team is looking for at a particular time. We had some times dealing with foul trouble or perhaps a defensive assignment and the depth of our team was very evident. We are enjoying trying to continue building the team chemistry needed to become a top team. Our next game will be on Tuesday evening at Immaculate Conception High School at 7:30pm. Please keep coming out to support the Trojans.

Trojans win opener at Lisle

The Trojans opened the Lisle Thanksgiving tournament with a 56-41 win over Montini on Tuesday Nov. 25. Some first game nerves were evident as the Trojans fell behind early to find themselves on the short end at the quarter 15-9. The shortfall continued to 21-9 when Sophomore Mark Penczak drilled a 3 point basket to cut the deficit to 9 and the team continued to whittle down the score to trail 21-25 at the half. The Trojans regrouped at halftime and came out with renewed energy and played very good team basketball to outscore their opponent 22-7 in the 3rd quarter. The Trojans also won the 4th quarter battle and finished the game with the final score of 56-41. Although the team did start a little rough, it was nice to see the Trojans keep battling and using their teammates to continue moving forward as the game played on. The game showed the depth of the Trojans as was evident in the box score. The Trojans were led by Peter Tameling with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Reggie Greenwood finished with 10 points, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Jaaron Holmes kept the team in the game in the 2nd quarter playing with 2 fouls and showed tremendous leadership finishing with 7 points and 3 assists. Junior Kordel Smith finished with 9 points and had a tremendous offensive rebound highlight going above the rebound to tip in a missed shot. Senior Rob White finished with 4 points, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds. Sophomores Mark Penczak and Mike Pizzello began their varsity careers in fine fashion. Mark finished with 5 points and 1 assist and Mike Pizzello finished with 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals. Mike also played an excellent defensive game. The Trojans shot 78.6% from the Free throw line. The next game is Friday Night at Lisle at 6:00 vs. Driscoll Catholic and again on Saturday at Lisle at 7:30 vs the host Lions from Lisle. Please come on out and support the Trojans.
