Timothy Christian captured its first sectional championship since 1980 by beating Providence-St. Mel 58-47 Friday in the Class 2A Plano Sectional final.

The Trojans (24-6) raced out to a 17-3 lead after one quarter and never let the Knights get closer than nine points the rest of the way.

"This mean so much," Timothy coach Jack LeGrand said. "It's been since 1980 since we won a sectional and it's so exciting. This is so big for the school. I'm just so proud of the guys."

Timothy will now take on Hales in the Joliet Township Supersectional Tuesday, with the winner advancing to the state tournament March 12-13 in Peoria.

Timothy led 34-17 at halftime. The Trojans, who won their ninth game in a row, limited Providence (16-12) to just 6-of-29 shooting (21 percent) in the first half, including just 1-of-11 in the first quarter. Rob Stein had nine points, nine rebounds, two blocks and a steal to pace the Trojans in the opening half and finished with 19 points, 13 rebounds, three blocks and two steals.

Timothy led 46-30 after three quarters, but Providence pulled within nine on two occasions, but couldn't get any closer.

Timothy also received key contributions from Mark Penczak (13 points, nine rebounds, two steals), Reggie Greenwood (10 points, six rebounds, three steals), Justin Peeples (six points, two rebounds, two steals), Mike Pizzello (three points, seven rebounds, block), Matt Morrison (three points, three rebounds) and Dan Leach (four points, steal).

"It means a lot to us," Pizzello said. "This hasn't happened in 30 years at our school. We have a great group of guys that come out and practice hard every day. This has been the goal for us all year."

Providence-St. Mel was led by Keshon Adkins (13 points, four rebounds), Lazarus Gray (10 points, seven rebounds) and Torry Walker (eight points, four rebounds).
