The RED ZONE in the Timothy Christian Gymnasium was rocking on Tuesday night for the home opener vs neighborhood rival Immaculate Conception.
The Knights from IC jumped out to a 19-12 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The Trojans clawed their way back into the contest and were down 24-23 at the half. The game remained close the rest of the way.
IC held a 47-41 advantage late in the 4th quarter when Luke Davidson and Justin Rhiner made some big baskets to pull the Trojans close and then Connor VanderBrug made a clutch shot to tie the game at 49. That would be the end of regulation.
During the 1st overtime, neither team would give an inch as the teams exchanged leads. IC was able to secure the lead down the stretch but once again Connor VanderBrug and then Danny Leach (with 7 seconds to go) would hit clutch shots to end the 1st overtime tied at 55-55.
During the 2nd OT, Connor VanderBrug would join Justin Rhiner on the bench with their 5th foul of the evening. The Trojans would hang on to win the exciting game 68-61.
Connor VanderBrug (24 pts, 10 rebs, 1 blk, 1 assist), Danny Leach (14 pts, 3 assists, 1 reb, 2 stls), Luke Davidson (12 pts, 7 rebs, 3 assists, 1 stl, OUTSTANDING DEFENSE), and Justin Rhiner (8 pts, 1 reb)all came up very big on the night. Jimmy Larkin (5 pts), Wes Ditchfield (3 pts, 3 rebs, 1 assist,), George Thompson (3 rebs, 2 assists, 2 pts), and Matt Huizinga (1 reb), all cracked the scoresheet for the evening.
The Trojans would shoot a much better 76% from the FT line on this evening as well as 49% from the field.
The Trojans will open conference play on Friday night at 7:00 pm at Glenbard South High School. Please come out and support the Trojans.
