Trojans fall to Waubonsie Valley

In the 4th game of the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic the Trojans were matched up against Waubonsie Valley with the winner playing Dec. 31st for the Consolation championship of the 32-team tournament. This game proved to be a defensive battle as both teams shot below 40% for the game and limited the offensive boards. The game started with two quick Waubonsie Valley three pointers but WV cooled off as the Trojans limited them to primarily shots from the perimeter. In a low scoring first half the Trojans trailed by a score of 15-11 at halftime. In the second half both teams struggled to score with TC going into the fourth trailing by six points. The Trojans closed the lead to 25-21 but that was as close as it got with TC eventually falling by a score of 25-36. The lose meant that TC was eliminated from the tournament and finished with a 2-2 record for the tournament. The Trojans overall record drops to 8-5(3-1 conference) with their next game being a conference game on Jan. 7 at 7pm at Illiana Christian.

For the game Khali Valrie was high score with 14 points on 5-9 shooting. Justin Rhiner, Connor VanderBrug, Joe Bishop, and Wes Ditchfield recorded four rebounds apiece. Bishop also dished out two assists and Valrie contributed two steals for the TC cause. Thanks to all those who came out to support the Trojans at the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic. Have a safe New year and a blessed 2014!

Trojans Capture Tournament Win over Minooka

It is Christmas time and that means back-to-back-to-back games for the Trojans and all teams participating in the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic. After splitting the first two games of the tournament the Trojans captured their second win of the tournament downing the Minooka Indians by a score of 44-43. The game was very much in doubt throughout as the Trojans led early only to have Minooka fight and claw back to tie the score 21-21 at halftime. Minooka came out of halftime executing on all cylinders as they went on a 14-5 run in the third quarter to take a 9-pt lead at 35-26. The Trojans, however, rallied back to tie the score up at 38-38, aided by two three point field goals by Justin Rhiner. For the rest of the game it went from TC leading to a tie score and ultimately TC leading. Two free throws each by Khali Valrie and Robert McGivney gave TC the lead with minutes to play. Valrie got TC the lead for good on a lay-up that extended the lead to 44-40. The Indians made 3-pt field goal to bring the game to 44-43 and that is how it would end as TC came out victorious.

In a relatively low scoring game the Trojans were led in scoring by Khali Valrie with 20 points. Connor VanderBrug had 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks while Robert McGivney chipped in 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. The Trojans next game is Monday, December 30 at 7:30pm at York High School against Waubonsie Valley. With the win TC improves its record to 8-4(3-1 conference). Thanks for supporting TC basketball!

Trojans Down McHenry

In the second game of the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic the Trojans found themselves matched up against McHenry as both teams had lost their tournament opener. TC came out the gate slowly but falling trailing 7-0 in the early minutes but quickly turned it around to lead the game by 13 points at the half. That lead swelled to 16 points at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter, however, proved to be exciting. McHenry using the aid of the 3-pointer to push tie up the score at 47-47 with only minutes remaining. After a Connor VanderBrug lay-up the Trojans cleared the Warriors miss. Forced to foul, Khali Valrie made two free throws to extend the lead to 4 points. A defensive stop, a TC missed free throw, and another defensive stop resulted in the Trojans running out the clock and claiming the 51-47 victory over the McHenry Warriors.

High Scorer and rebounder for the game was Connor VanderBrug with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Khali Valrie had 11 points and 4 assists. Joe Bishop had 6 rebounds and Robert McGivney contributed 4 rebounds and 2 assists in the win. The Trojans next game is Dec. 28 at 1:30pm vs. Minooka. Trojans Fall in Tournament Opener

After many years of playing holiday basketball at Glenbard West the Trojans have gone back to the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic in 2013. In the opening game, TC was matched up against Elk Grove Village. Elk Grove came out clicking taking advantage of defensive breakdowns and their own hot shooting including six first half 3-pointers to take a 33-20 halftime lead as the Trojans struggled to get anything going offensively on this night. TC was unable to close in the second half as the game ended with the Trojans losing by a score of 38-58. The lose means that the Trojans play against McHenry on Dec. 27th at 1:00pm. McHenry fell just short against Palatine in their tournament opener.

The 2nd quarter saw the Trojans gain some momentum and make a little run to lead the half 27-22. The momentum was short-lived as Westmont came right back to cut the lead to 1 to begin the 3rd quarter. Thanksgiving tournament results

The Trojans started the season with the annual Thanksgiving tournament at Lisle High School. On Tuesday, the Trojans opened up with University High School. The first game jitters were evident as both teams struggled scoring early. The game would turn into a tightly played contest as both teams exchanged scores and were tied with about 3 minutes to play. U-High was able to take the lead and hold on down the stretch to defeat the Trojans 52-44. Connor VanderBrug led the way with 11 pts, 11 rebs, 4 assists, 3 blocks, and 2 steals. Sophomore Ben Lodewyk chipped in 8 pts, 4 assists, 3 steals. Khali Valrie (7 pts, 2 rebs), Riley Chapman (6 pts), Justin Rhiner (5 pts, 2 rebs, 2 assists, 1 stl), Wes Ditchfield (3 pts, 4 rebs, 1 assist), and Robert McGivney (4 pts, 4 rebs) rounded out the stat sheet.

On Friday the Trojans tried to shake off the rust from the Thanksgiving dinner vs Perspectives. The game was close throughout and then the Trojans found themselves down by 10 pts with 4:30 seconds to play in the game. The Trojans put together a furious comeback to tie the game. The opportunities were there for the taking but the Trojans could not get the job done as Perspectives had the ball with .8 seconds under the hoop. They were able to put in a tip in off a deflection to defeat the Trojans 48-46. The shocking end to the game hurt, but we will learn from this loss and move on. Connor VanderBrug led the Trojans with 21 pts, 16 rebs, 3 stls. Khali Valrie had a strong second half finishing with 10 pts, 3 stls, and 4 assists. Justin Rhiner (8 pts, 3 rebs, 1 stl), Robert McGivney (4 rebs, 2 pts, 3 assists), Wes Ditchfield (6 rebs, 2 pts, 1 assist), Riley Chapman (2 pts), Ben Lodewyk (3 stls, 1 assist, 1 reb),and Logan Byrne all made contributions in the game.

Saturday night saw the Trojans earn their first victory on the season beating the Lisle Lions 44-24. The first quarter saw the Trojans get out to an early lead only to give the lead up and trail 10-9 at the end of the 1st quarter. The rest of the way would be all Trojans as they would play some stingy defense to get the victory. Hot shooting by Connor VanderBrug (20 pts, 6 rebs, 2 asssist, 2 blocks) and an outstanding floor game by Justin Rhiner (5 steals, 4 assists, 5 pts, 3 rebs) led the way. Trojans win first game and then lose in Regional Semi-finals

The Timothy Christian men began state tournament play on Monday at Chicago Marshall. The Trojans were moved up to 3A this year by the IHSA and played their first game vs Chicago Wells. The first half saw a slow start for the Trojans as they struggled a bit to get things going. Leading 18-10 at the quarter, they began to slowly get a little rhythm and led 31-17 at the break. The 3rd quarter saw the Trojans outscore Chicago Wells 21-12 for a lead of 52-29 after 3. The Trojans would hold on the rest of the way to make a little history with the first state tournament win in 3A by a score of 60-36.

Danny Leach led the way in with 17 pts, 9 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 blocks, and 1 assist. George Thompson (11 pts, 7 rebs, 2 assists), Connor Vanderbrug (10 pts, 7 rebs, 1 assist, 2 blks, 2 stls), Luke Davidson (8 pts, 3 rebs, 2 assists), Justin Funchess (7 pts, 3 rebs, 1 assist), Jimmy Larkin (7 pts, 3 rebs, 1 stl), Wes Ditchfield (5 assists, 2 rebs, 1 block), Justin Rhiner (1 reb), Matt Huizinga (1 reb), Logan Byrne (1 reb), Phil Stanton and Rich Medina all contributed in the victory.

After a snowstorm came through the area, the Trojans traveled to Marshall on Wednesday to play the host school. This night saw the host commandos come out shooting hot and building a lead of 21-14 after the 1st quarter. They would extend this lead but then the Trojans would answer and trailed by 10 at the break 31-21. At halftime, the Trojans talked about trying to get the deficit down going into the 4th quarter but Marshall had other plans as they built their lead to 22 pts near the end of the 3rd. The Trojans would not go down without a fight and staged a strong comeback bid in the 4th quarter. The deficit would get down to 9 pts with about 5 minutes to play and the Trojans could only keep it that close but not get any closer as they would fall on this night 73-52.

The Trojans would be led on this night by the 3 captains. Junior Connor VanderBrug (27 pts, 7 rebs, 2 assists, 2 blocks), Senior Danny Leach (19 pts, 3 rebs, 1 assist, 1 stl), and Senior Luke Davidson (6 pts, 4 rebs, 1 assist) would score all the Trojans pts on the evening. Justin Rhiner (1 assist), Justin Funchess (2 rebs, 1 stl), Wes Ditchfield (5 rebs, 1 assist), George Thompson (1 reb), and Matt Huizinga (1 reb) would crack the score sheet on the evening.

It is difficult to end the season but I was very proud of how hard our guys worked this season and also how they continued to improve and become a much bettter team as the season unfolded after a slow start. The Trojans were 4-10 at Christmas and 1-5 during the first half of conference play. The Trojans ended the season going 9-5 and 4-2 in conference play the 2nd time through. The Trojans finished the season at 13-15 and 5-7 in the Metro Suburban Confernece. Thanks to all the Seniors who will be missed and also a big THANK YOU to all the fans who support Timothy Christian Basketball.

Leach hits game winner for TC victory!

The Trojans captured their regular season finale in thrilling fashion on Friday night. Senior Danny Leach sunk a game-winning three-pointer as time expired to beat the Ridgewood Rebels by a score of 48-46. The game was close throughout, as the Trojans led early, but trailed by two at the half and by nine points at the end of three quarters. TC kept closing the gap only to have the Rebels respond. With just over a minute to play, the Trojans trailed by five points. Danny Leach knocked down a 3-pointer to close the game to within two points. On the Rebel’s next offensive possession, they converted two free throws after Timothy had fouled. Trailing by four, TC brought the ball up once again and Leach knocked in another highly contested three-pointer to pull the Trojans within one point with 15 seconds to play. On the ensuing possession the Trojans fouled and Ridgewood failed to make good on the one-and-one. TC captured the rebound, brought it over halfcourt, and used their last timeout with 8.2 seconds to play and trailing by one. The last possession of the game put the ball in the hands of senior Danny Leach and as he came off the screen he was trapped, stepped through, and shot an off-balance three pointer that bounced off the front of the rim and into the basket for the TC victory.

Crucial to the Trojans cause on this night was 8 points and 16 rebounds from Luke Davidson. Connor Vanderbrug had 13 points and 7 rebounds. Vanderbrug also did a nice job of patrolling the lane on the defensive end for the Trojans and had a nice two-handed dunk to start of the second half. Danny Leach was high scorer for the game as he finished with 19 points and 4 rebounds. George Thompson and Wes Ditchfield contributed four and three rebounds respectively.

The Trojans finished the regular season with a record of 12-14(5-7 league) and will now travel to 3A regionals at Chicago Marshall. Their first game is Monday, February 25 at 5:00pm versus Chicago Wells. Should they win that game they will play again the next day versus Chicago Marshall at 5:00pm. What an exciting way to end the regular season! Thanks for coming out as supporting the Trojans! Please come out and support the Trojans as they begin state tournament play!

TC falls to Broncos, Defeat Bisons

On Tuesday, February 12th the Trojans honored their seniors and also hosted the Walther Lutheran Broncos. The Trojans came out sluggish in the first half as they struggled to find their shooting touch. Trailing by 18 at halftime the Trojans refused to give up, reducing the lead to 9 at the end of the third quarter and closing the gap to as few as two. In the end though, the Broncos pulled out the victory by a score of 57-50. Connor VanderBrug led the scoring with 20 points, along with 6 rebounds, and Danny Leach contributed 10 points and 4 assists, but the Trojans were unable to overcome a poor shooting night from the field.

To aid the Trojans cause Wes Ditchfield had 3 rebounds and 2 steals, Luke Davidson had 4 rebounds and 3 assists, and Justin Funchess had 7 points(3-4 FG). The lose dropped the Trojans record to 10-14(3-7 league). The coaching staff would like to thank the seniors for the contributions that they have made to the TC basketball progam!

On Friday night the Trojans played at Fenton High School and used a hot-start by junior Connor VanderBrug to take an 11 point lead only 4 minutes into the game. The Bison rallied closing the gap to 6 by the end of the quarter but they could draw it no closer the rest of the way. TC used a stingy defensive effort in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 10-point lead. In the second half TC extended the lead to 16 by the end of third quarter and came away with a 60-43 victory. For the game, Connor VanderBrug had 29 points on 6-10 shooting from beyond the arc. Khali Valrie contributed 4 rebounds and Luke Davidson pulled down 8 boards. Danny Leach had 17 points on 7-14 shooting, while also contributing 5 rebounds, 4 steals, and 4 assists. The win improved the Trojans record to 11-14(4-7 league).

The Trojans regular season finale is on Friday, Feb. 22 at Ridgewood High School at 7:00pm. On Monday, Feb. 25 the Trojans begin 3A regional with a matchup vs. Chicago Wells at 5:00pm at Chicago Marshall. Thank you for your support of TC athletics!

Trojans drop hard fought contest vs R.B. on Homecoming night

Friday night at Timothy was Homecoming night. The gym was buzzing with excitement for all the Homecoming festivities. The Trojans had a tough task ahead of them as they were hosting conference leader Riverside Brookfield. The Trojans came out a bit flat and RB jumped to a 8-0 lead. The Trojans were able to settle down a bit and then shoot very well to get them back into the game trailing at the end of the 1st quarter 25-18. As the 2nd quarter came to a close Luke Davidson (7 pts, 6 assists, 6 rebs, 1 stl) outhustled everyone to an offensive rebound and a stickback shot to give the Trojans a lead at halftime 39-36. The 3rd quarter saw the Bulldogs regain control and at the end of the 3rd, the Trojans were down 47-39. A Justin Rhiner (6 pts, 3 rebs) made 3 pt basket pulled the Trojans even at 56. The score was again tied at 59. Riverside was able to gain control of the closely fought game and make free throws down the stretch to defeat the Trojans 72-63. Danny Leach (27 pts, 2 rebs, 2 stls, 2 blks), Connor VanderBrug (15 pts, 10 rebs, 3 stls), Khalie Valrie (5 pts, 4 rebs, 1 assist), Wes Ditchfield (2 rebs, 2 assists), Justin Funchess (1 assist, 1 reb), Jimmy Larkin (1 stl), and George Thompson (3 pts) all cracked the scoresheet. The game was a closely fought contest and other than some poor free throw shooting and poor execution at times, the Trojans played a pretty strong game on the evening. Thank you to the RED ZONE and parents for such a great atmosphere. The Trojans next game will be Tuesday night at Home vs Elmwood Park at 7:00 pm. Please come out and support the Trojans.
