Trojans end season in Regional Championship loss

Friday night saw the Trojans come up on the short end of a 49-40 score vs. Providence St. Mel. It was a re-match between two teams who had played each other last year in a sectional final won by the Trojans. St. Mel had beaten the Trojans earlier this season in a double overtime thriller at the Lisle Thanksgiving tournament. The championship game did not disappoint in the excitement category. St. Mel got out to a 10-2 lead before the Trojans settled down and closed the gap at the quarter to be trailing 10-9. The second quarter saw back and forth momentum plays and at the half, the Trojans were leading 21-20. The 3rd quarter was a stumbling block as the Trojans could not find the shooting touch and trailed at the end of the 3rd 34-27. During the 4th quarter, the Trojans got down by as much as 9 pts and fought their way back to close the gap to 3. The Trojans could not get any closer and needed to foul down the stretch. St. Mel was able to hit enough free throws to secure the victory 49-40.

Mike Pizzello played an exceptional game in all areas. He played solid defense on St. Mel's big man and also scored 18 pts, 10 rebs, 3 stls, and 1 assist. Chad Vos showed his usual solid defense as well and also finished with 2 pts, 3 rebs, 2 stls, 1 assist. Chris Ridolphi (7 pts, 7 rebs), Mark Penczak (8 pts, 4 rebs, 3 assists), Danny Leach (3 pts, 4 rebs, 1 stl), Matt Robinson (2 pts, 1 assist), Nate Ziegler (1 reb), and Nathan Boot (3 rebs) all cracked the stat sheet. The Trojans struggled shooting on this night and shot just 30% from the field.

The loss was a very disappointing way to end the season but Coach LeGrand and Coach Huizinga would like to thank the guys for an exciting season. The Trojans finished with a record of 17-10 and 7-5 on the season. They finished in 2nd place in the Metro-Suburban conference where they were picked in the pre-season to finish no better than 5th. A special thank you to all of our seniors: Nathan Boot, Troy Ellens, Jon Penczak, Mark Penczak, Mike Pizzello, Chad Vos, and Nathan Ziegler. You did an excellent job making major contributions to the Trojan program and you will be missed.

Congratulations to Troy Ellens and Mark Penczak who did advance in the 3 pt shooting contest. They will shoot at Sectionals on Wednesday at Aurora Christian. If they advance Wednesday they will shoot on Friday for the chance to compete at state in Peoria. Good luck gentlemen.

Congratulations also to Mike Pizzello and Mark Penczak who were selected to the Metro Suburban All-Conference team.

Thank you to all the fans who were so supportive this season. Your support was greatly appreciated.

Trojans end regular season by splitting games

This past weekend, the Trojans finished off the regular season. On Friday night, the Trojans traveled to Fenton High School to face the Bison. On this night, the Bison were able to control the game. The Trojans played a decent defensive game but offensively they could not get anything going all evening. Fenton led at the half 23-12. The Trojans made a run in the second half trying to increase the tempo of the game and get things going offensively. They were able to cut it to two points at one point but could not get the lead. Fenton held on down the stretch and the Trojans lost 50-36. Mike Pizzello (13 pts) was the only player to get into double figures on the night. The Trojans wanted to quickly forget this game and move on to the next day to play Glenbard South.
On Saturday, the Trojans bounced back nicely by closing the regular season with a hard fought victory vs. Glenbard South 59-58. Homecoming victory for Trojans !!

Friday night was Homecoming at Timothy and there was a very electric atmosphere in the Timothy Christian gymnasium. Besides all the homecoming festivities, the Red Zone had called this a Silent night for the fans. The first part of the game was played in a eerily quiet gym as the teams played even. When the Trojans scored their 10th point on a Chad Vos layup, the gym erupted with cheers and they continued the rest of the evening. The game was a hard fought contest and some very hot shooting by Ridgewood gave the Rebels the lead at the half 33-28. The Trojans came out very flat in the 3rd quarter and Ridgewood took advantage to build a 12 pt lead in the middle of the third quarter. It was then that the bench came to the rescue. Tyler VanderBrug (2-3's, 2 rebs, 1 assist), Troy Ellens (7pts, 3 rebs, 1 assist), Nathan Ziegler (2 assists, 1 reb), Matt Robinson (1 reb, 1 assist), and Chad Vos (6 pts, 1 reb, 1 assist) provided the spark that was missing. Their inspired play and sharp shooting (3-3's) during the end of the 3rd quarter provided a 11-1 run to close the quarter with the Trojans trailing 42-44. The energy and execution carried over as the Trojans were able to take the lead in the fourth quarter and finish the night with a 63-56 victory. Matt Morrison (4pts, 1 reb, 1 assist), Chris Ridolphi (2 pts, 3 rebs, 2 assists, 1 stl), Danny Leach (10 pts, 5 rebs, 2 assists, 1 block), Mike Pizzello (15 pts, 5 rebs, 3 stls, 2 assists), and Mark Penczak (13 pts, 6 assists, 5 rebs) all found themselves on the stat sheet on the night as well. The coaching staff was very proud of the team effort for the victory. For the players to come off the bench and provide such a lift was a testament to not only their physical talents but also their mental toughness to be ready to contribute in such a strong way for the team. The team then showed their togetherness to finish strong in the fourth quarter to come away with the hard fought victory. The Trojans move to 14-8 on the season and are now tied for 3rd place in the conference with a 5-4 record. This week will be a busy week as the Trojans have Senior night on Tuesday night vs. Elmwood Park with a 7:00 pm start. They then will play an away game on Friday at Fenton at 7:00 pm and a make up game which will be played on Saturday at Glenbard South at 4:30 pm. Please keep coming out and supporting the Trojans.

Trojans beat Vikings in overtime

Finally playing ball again after the snow storm of 2011 caused many schools to miss school and practice for two days, there was some concern as to how the Trojans would play on Friday night. The intensity of the conference game with Illiana was present from the beginning. In the first quarter, the Trojans came out playing well and were leading by a 16-8 score at the first break. During the second quarter, the Vikings got it going and the Trojans struggled offensively as the half time score was 25-23 in favor of the Trojans. During the beginning of the 3rd quarter, Illiana moved ahead by about 8 points and then the Trojans responded with a run of their own. Mark Penczak found Mike Pizzello for a basket at the end of the 3rd quarter pulling the Trojans within four by a score of 38-42. The fourth quarter was back and forth and the Trojans found themselves down 3 with 15 seconds to play. After a mad scramble, Mike Pizzello found Danny Leach at the top of the key and he knocked down the 3 pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime with the score knotted 54-54. In the overtime period, things remained at a high excitement level as both teams had their opportunities and the game went back and forth. In the end, the Trojans were able to come out with a hard fought victory by a score of 62-58.
Mark Penczak (17 pts, 6 rebs, 8 assists)had a solid all around game again for the Trojans. Chris Ridolphi (11 pts, 6 rebs, 5 stls) also played a complete game. On Friday night, the Timothy Christian Gymnasium was rocking once again. The Red Zone was out in full force and the game turned into quite an exciting contest. The Trojans came out very sluggish in the first quarter and Walther had the intensity needed right from the start. At the end of the first quarter the Trojans trailed by a score of 20-9. The team did not quit nor did they try to get everything back at once. They kept chipping away at the lead and at the half trailed 29-23. The third quarter was a back and forth contest and a 3 pointer at the buzzer by Mike Pizzello brought the Trojans within 46-42 at the quarter. The fourth quarter saw the Trojans to continue to battle and finally take the lead only to see Walther regain the lead. The Trojans were able to have the lead by one when Matt Morrison came up with a crucial block on a driving shot by a Walther player. Matt also then got a crucial steal on the inbound. Trojans take two this weekend

This weekend was very busy and exciting for the boys from Timothy. On Friday night, the Trojans faced a tough conference opponent in Fenton. The game was close throughout with the Trojans down 24-23 at the half. A strong third quarter put the Trojans ahead at the end of the 3rd quarter 40-36. The fourth quarter was a see saw battle and the game was tied with about 16 seconds to go when Chris Ridolphi found Mike Pizzello for a baseline shot to take the lead with about 6 seconds to play. Fenton was able to get off a 3 pt attempt which was just short and they got an offensive rebound and the put back rimmed out so the Trojans were able to hold on for a 53-51 victory. Mike Pizzello led the Trojans with 14 pts, 6 stls, and 3 rebs. There were strong contributions from many team members. Chris Ridolphi (9 pts, 4 rebs, 2 assists, 1 stl), Mark Penczak (9 pts, 4 rebs, 2 stls, 1 assist), Danny Leach (9 pts, 5 assists, 1 steal, 1 reb), Nathan Boot (4 rebs, 4 pts), Matt Robinson (3 pts, 4 rebs, 4 stls, 2 assists), Nathan Ziegler (3 rebs, 2 assists, 2 pts.), Chad Vos (2 pts, 2 rebs, 2 assists), and Matt Morrison (1 reb, 1 stl) all appeared on the stat sheet on this night.

On Saturday, the Trojans travelled to Holland Michigan to take on the Maroons from Holland Christian. Once again, the snow, ice, and cold weather made for a long tiring trip. The trip was worth it as the game was very entertaining for the fans. The Civic center was rocking as the Trojans and Maroons did battle in a closely fought contest. In the end, the Trojans were able to pull out the victory 76-68 in overtime.

Holland Christian has a starting line-up with height that college coaches dream about. They have four players starting who are all over 6'4.
They start 6'9, 6'7, 6'5, 6'4 and 5'11. The Trojans were at a height disadvantage but were able to ride the quickness and hot shooting of Danny Leach (20 pts, 5-7 from 3 pt land) to go into half-time with a 36-27 lead. The third quarter saw Holland come back on the Trojans and at the end of the third the score was 51-49 Trojans. The fourth quarter was a back and forth battle and the Trojans had a chance to win it at the end but missed a jumper at the buzzer. With the teams tied at 64-64 they headed to overtime. In the overtime, Mark Penczak buried a 3 pt shot to give the Trojans the lead. The defense stepped up to contest shots and Mike Pizzello was able to make 9-10 free throws in the overtime and preserve the victory for Timothy 76-68.

Mike Pizzello continued to have a very strong weekend. He finished the night with a double/double recording 25 pts and 11 rebounds to go along with 5 steals and 5 assists. Mark Penczak and Chad Vos had very strong games to go along with the shooting of Pizzello and Leach. Thank you so much to all the fans that came out to Holland for the weekend. It was a very enjoyable time by all.
The entire Trojan basketball team is to be commended for continuing to work hard each and every day. We are starting to put things together and their hard work and positive attitude is very much appreciated. The Trojans now stand at 10-7 on the season and are 3-3 in conference play.

The next game is Home on Tuesday vs. Aurora Christian and then again on Friday vs. Walther Lutheran. Both games have 7:30 pm starts.
